BIOGRAPHY
Very early on in her artistic research, Julie Barbeau turned her attention to exploring optical phenomena.
Fascinated by light, that elusive material which nevertheless governs our entire experience of the world, she immerses herself in embroidered explorations based on this observation. Having always had a keen interest in science and mathematics, the laws of physics and optics form the basis of her exploration, which she chooses to appropriate through the prism of art and textiles. It was through haute-couture that Julie Barbeau discovered the world of fine crafts. With an initial artistic background in design and applied arts, she then trained in embroidery in the Paris region. She then discovered several workshops, for which she worked on an occasional basis. She soon decided to set up her own textile workshop. Enthralled by the expertise she had acquired in the world of luxury, she aspired to combine her own artistic and contemporary identity with the traditional gestures of a very specific art craft. She founded her eponymous studio in 2019.
Julie Barbeau is very keen to promote the local economy, short distribution channels and transparency about the origins of the objects that surround us, and places great importance on the origin of the materials she uses. 100% French linen, recycled cotton, French sequins and thread… The local area boasts a rich textile industry, on which the designer bases all her artistic ideas.
