BIOGRAPHY
Damián Valdés Dilla was born in 1970 and lives near Havana, Cuba. As a teenager, he developed schizophrenia and paranoid delusions. He is receiving treatment for these conditions. These symptoms prevent him from leading what is considered a “normal” life. Furthermore, the place where he lives with his mother is isolated from the rest of the metropolitan area.
His creations paintings and sketchbooks made from assemblages of wood and other recycled materials emerge from his inner turmoil. In 1997, he joined a group of self-taught artists but was forced to leave because his work did not align with the country’s official doctrine. In 2014, he drew his structured or war-torn cities, devoid of figures, incorporating numerous architectural styles such as Byzantine domes, skyscrapers, ships, and more. These drawings are created using ballpoint pens and colored pencils.
The artist also creates sculptures of airplanes, helicopters, rockets, and more—made from waste materials that he transforms into works of art.
The Beaubourg Museum, the Lausanne Collection, and private collections have included Damián Valdés Dilla in their catalogs.
