Jaber

BIOGRAPHY

Jaber El Mahjoub said Jaber, born on 5 January 1938 in M’saken and died on 21 October 2021 in Paris, was an Outsider Art Brut artist. Orphaned at a very young age, he was raised by his sister Zina.

At that time he was a shepherd and did not attend school. He was illiterate. In 1948, at the age of 10, he left Tunisia and his journey also took him on a donkey to Saudi Arabia. This animal will often be represented in his works. As he used to say: The donkey is my first car. Jaber had several jobs: baker, where he drew in the flour, boxer and actor-singer. From 1978 to 1980, he exhibited at the Winter Exhibition. He came to live in Paris in 1980, where he met Jean Dubuffet. His works are presented in several art brut museums and in private collections.

Jaber left us on 21 October 2021 in total solitude. After several weeks in a mortuary, his body was repatriated to his native country where he was buried with dignity.

He was a joyful artist, which is reflected in his colourful works.
